Run Windows 7 on your Mac!

Post by Ranger 50 on Fri Mar 18, 2011 8:49 am

I've always been looking for way to run Windows applications on my little Macbook. Although Macs are sweet, everyone still needs that spot of Microsoft. Aaand finally! After days of research and trials, I've finally found the best way to run...

    Windows 7 on your MAC.

Yeah you heard right. Windows 7. On your Mac. Ever wanted to run Windows applications on your Mac? Then this tutorial will give you that chance.

    Requirements

    • A Mac running Leopard or higher (I use Snow Leopard [10.6.6]
    • At least 1GB RAM (To see your Mac's RAM capacity, click on the apple sign on the top left of your mac > About This Mac > and look for a number with GB in front of it in the Memory bit)
    • A BitTorrent client (I use uTorrent, click this to download.)
    • Some patience

    What to Do

    1. Download Parallels Desktop 6. You need to pay for it, but here's how to get it free.

I would normally tell you how to get Parallels for free, but I am not allowed to share warez (downloads that can get you paid programs free). Therefore download parallels from here. Just get the trial. If you want you can try and obtain a serial key from somewhere on the web and get the full version.

    2. Download the Windows 7 ISO file. Skip this bit if you have a Windows 7 installation CD.

Try and look on the web for a Windows 7 ISO download. Don't forget, it has to be an application ending in .iso. This website might have it.

    3. Now, open Parallel's Desktop 6. (I'll refer to it as PD6 from now on.)

It will show a small window with 3 different sections: New Windows Installation | Migrate Windows from PC | Use your Virtual Machines.

Now I will assume you haven't used PD6 before, so let's go to New Windows Installation. A different window titled 'Create New Virtual Machine' should show. If you have a Windows 7 installation CD, then then select the CD in the popup list. If not, click Choose an image file. Navigate to the place where you saved the Windows 7 ISO file, and double click the ISO. Open that, and hit Continue.

    4. The main Installation

    a) You should now be asked to add in a product key. If you have a product key, add that in. If not, uncheck the box labeled This version requires a product key, and hit Continue.

    b) You will now be asked to decide on your Integration preference. Choose either Like a Mac or Like a PC and hit continue. I chose Like a PC.

    c) Name it Windows 7 1.

    d) Create.

    e) Follow the installation instructions. Somewhere along the installation a window called Parallels Virtual Machines should show. That isn't important at the moment.

Once you have that over and done with.

Now, you should be running Windows 7 on your Mac. Congratulations!

If you selected Like a Mac, then your Mac should be in Coherence mode. That's basically Windows 7 merged with your Mac, so you can do whatever in a single interface. If you don't like that, and want to try out a full-on Windows 7 interface, then go back to the Parallels Virtual Machines window (where the Windows 7 1 virtual machine should be). Click on the Windows 7 1 tab in the Parallels Virtual Machines window. Along the top, where the Mac taskbar should be, click View > Window. Wait until it finshes configuring. If you want it in full screen, it's View > Full Screen.

You can alternate between Coherence and Window modes any time you like.

And that's it! You are now running Windows 7 on your Mac. Now you can run Windows applications on your Mac anytime you like!

I hope you liked the tutorial and it proved useful for you.

    G'day.

Sometimes being able to run Windows is handy, though. For Mac users. I can think of at least 5 Windows applications that I would use on a regular basis, and being able to run both interfaces at the same time is extremely useful. =P

I can name you about 20. Oh wait, those are all touhou games and spinoffs.

Oh, and don't forget the millions of exe files that don't work on macs. Don't forget those, either.
