If you like Anime and very complicated and unique storylines, you will definitely like this:

    Serial Experiments Lain.

Lain is like a very complicated puzzle that you have to figure out, just like the characters have to, stretching over 13 episodes.
I suggest you to watch it in your first language (English dub link included in this post)

An Animé for your free time. [S.E. Lain Thread revived] Lain2b10

It is hard to tell things about it without giving anything away, so I would not recommend you to look at a storyline explanation. I will rather tell you about the first episode...

Lain is living in the outskirts of Tokyo with both her rather quiet mother, her sister and her computer-loving father.

The day after an eighth-grader in her school, Chisa Yomoda commits suicide, everyone in Lain's class receives an E-Mail via the Wired (which is an equivalent of our internet). Most people decide it must be a hoax. Still, Lain decides to check on her computer (which she didn't do for a very long time) and seemingly she received the same E-Mail, but she can also actively chat with the person sending the mails.

Soon it seems like Chisa really is still there, saying she just decided to stop using her body, having found "god" in the Wired...
Lain then decides to find out what is behind all this.

Ooookay, I hope that caught your attention already...

Here's a link to the first episode via stream:
    Layer 01 - Weird

If the video stream's sound is a little off click the video's progress bar once, Veoh can be like that.

The first 5 minutes can be quite confusing, I must admit that, but you will later find out there is a reason for all this.

If you are too lazy to search for the other episodes, click here.

    Erm... No.

Lain is far more complicated and it touches many theories about Gaia, Rushnoff's Cyberia, and the importance of life itself.
You could categorize it as cyberpunk.

Death Note on the other hand is pretty straightforward and you get an explanation for everything.

Post by Sold Out Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:20 am

Just wanted to bring this old beauty back up.

And to quote an IMDB review I would agree on while we're at it...

Abstract, unique and worthwhile-- but definitely not for everyone., 25 April 2011

    Author: pyschonautics from United States

I'm sure there are more detailed reviews out there, but I just want to keep it simple and explain the information I would be looking for when contemplating whether or not to watch a title.

I have watched a few animes out there, some more well-known than others, and I found that Serial Experiments: Lain is by far the strangest and most mysterious anime I have ever seen, in its own bizarre way. I am a big sci-fi fan and I originally watched this because it was listed as a "great sci-fi anime". Well, let me say now, it is so much more than that. Serial Experiments: Lain verges along the lines of philosophical science fiction, progressive mystery and cyberpunk fantasy.

The overall feel of the anime can be summed up as 'abstract'. Most of the episodes are incoherent, strange and dream-like, which adds to the mystery of it all. The plot, the characters, the minimalist animation, the strange visuals-- to me, they all seem to mimic a nostalgic hallucinogen trip. So yes, in my opinion, this is might be a good anime to watch under those types of conditions (for anyone interested in that). However, if you want to be able to understand the plot and make your own assumption of the series, you will need to watch it with your eyes, your ears and your brain completely focused on what's going on in each episode. This isn't your action-packed, hot girl-filled, fantasy-flick anime. This is basically food for your mind. And if you keep an open head, it will raise many philosophical questions and might even leave you interested in concepts you didn't know about before. Despite those factors, or because of them, this anime is not for everyone.

All-in-all, Serial Experiments: Lain is good for someone who doesn't mind making his or her own guesses at what a series means or how a plot comes together, even at the very end. It won't leave you with all the answers, but it will leave you with a plot that will only make sense if you try to put it together in your head, which might take hours or even days after your finish the series. But in my opinion, doing so would reflect the overall meaning of Serial Experiments: Lain, something that can't really be understood until experienced.

8/10 -- Very interesting and very worthwhile abstract sci-fi mystery series, but keep an open mind if you decide to watch it. It's not your average anime.

And to address all the "I don't watch Anime" people out there...
Please don't be prejudiced about the medium. Not liking something because it's 2D is pretty cheap.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Here you can get some more reviews, some positive, some negative, mostly well-argumented, sometimes not-so-much...

but it's always a good source to get some opinions.

So much for "Inception" being "complicated".

One Piece, Fairy Tail and Bleach?

Ah, you know what? I won't even comment on that. Enjoy this... whatever it is of yours.

    *EDIT*
Guess there's no accounting for taste anyway, it just differs greatly from my own. Keep in mind that the review I posted a while ago is an answer if you're contemplating if you should watch it.

Do you think I should make a more lightweight suggestion next time?

Thank you, doni. And sorry for my reaction when you mentioned Bleach etc.

I guess next time it's going to be something simple, something everyone can agree on, even something that people who are prejudiced against the 2D medium can enjoy; how else should these movies have made it on the top 100 movies of all time list after all?

I, of course, mean a Studio Ghibli film. Hayao Mizayaki to be exact.
